Mosby CD-ONLINE TITLES
Known Issues:
**Browsers**
This product was designed to work with Netscape Navigator
3.01. Other browsers should work, however, if problems occur your first step
should be to make sure the product is running in Navigator 3.01. If you have
two different browsers loaded on your computer and the program launches into
something other than Navigator 3.01, you must close the program, start the
Navigator 3.01 browser, then double-click on the program icon to open it in
this browser.
Macintosh users should note that on some computers the program does not
launch the Navigator 3.01 browser automatically. If this happens to you, open
the browser first, then double-click on the program icon.
**Corporate Intranets** If you see an error
message in your browser like the following when you start the program:
"Error. The requested item could not be loaded by the proxy."
"Netscape Proxy's network connection was refused by the server:
127.0.0.1:8080 The server may not be accepting connections or may be busy. Try
connecting again later."
"Proxy server at proxy.****.com on port 8080" You are probably
operating with a proxy in a corporate intranet behind a firewall. The firewall
is put up for your organization's protection, and a proxy allows you to access
external sites. Your browser needs to be set up so that it accesses the CD
directly and not through the proxy.
Follow these instructions to correct the problem:
Netscape Navigator 3.01:
- Click on Options on the menu, and select 'Network Preferences'...
- Click on the Proxies tab.
- If 'Manual Proxy Configuration' is selected, continue to step 4.
Otherwise, if 'Automatic Proxy Configuration' is selected, you must contact
your network administrator and ask how to change to a manual proxy
configuration.
- Click on View.
- Where it says 'No Proxy for:', type 127.0.0.1 into the box. If
there are other addresses already there, type a comma after the last address
and then 127.0.0.1
- Click OK twice and reload your browser or restart the program.
Netscape Communicator
- Click on Edit on the menu, and select 'Preferences'...
- Click on the plus sign next to Advanced.
- Click on Proxies.
- Follow steps 3, 4, and 5 above.
- Click OK and reload the browser or restart the program.
**TCP/IP installation in Windows 95 and NT for users without a
modem or a direct Internet connection (such as T1 or ISDN)**
- Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. A
window should open, displaying its contents.
- If you have a "Dial-Up Networking" icon, TCP/IP is
already installed on your computer, and you can proceed to the installation
from the CD. Otherwise continue to step 3.
- Click Start/Settings/Control Panel to open a window of its
contents.
- Double-click on the "Add/Remove Programs" icon. This
should open the "Add/Remove Programs Properties" dialog box.
- Select the "Windows Setup" tab to select it.
- Click once on the text of "Communications" (Don't select
the check box next to it.)
- Click "Details"... toward the bottom of the dialog box. A
"Communications" dialog box should open.
- Click in the check box next to "Dial-Up Networking" so
that it has a check mark in it.
- Click "OK" in the "Communications" dialog box,
and click "OK" again in the "Add/Remove Programs
Properties" dialog box.
- Windows may request that you insert the disks or CD-ROM that was
used to install Windows 95.
- Restart if Windows requests you to do so. When the computer
restarts, run the installation from the CD.
**Hardware**
A faster CD-ROM drive will greatly speed page loading. 2x
drives work but are slow, 12x or faster drives make big difference.
**Searching**
On some computers, the first search you conduct after
launching the program may take a little longer than normal. This will correct
itself with subsequent searches.
The initial search of each session can seem somewhat long on some slower
machines. Subsequent searches will all be very fast. For this reason it is a
good idea to leave the program running whenever possible. A faster CD-ROM drive
greatly reduces search times.
**For Macintosh Users**
**General**
If you launch the program and seems like nothing is happening
right away, be patient. The first time the application runs it may spend some
time looking for your browser.
When launching, you may see "search.1" appear in the Macintosh
title bar. Please note that this is the Verity CD-Web Server application that
will activate the browser and allow the search engine to run on your computer.
**Error Messages**
Error Message: "Netscape Cannot Create a Network
Socket"
If you are connected to the Internet and you are disconnected for any
reason, Netscape may lose its socket connection. If this happens, you may not
be able to access the data on the CD-ROM until you quit Netscape and restart
the program.
Workaround: Disable the "Disconnect if Idle for X minutes"
function in the "Connections" tab of the Macintosh PPP control panel.
Error Message: "Java Script Error....getSplash not defined."
This probably means you are using a browser other than Netscape Navigator
3.01. Quit your browser, open Navigator 3.01 and then run the program again.
**Corrupt Images**
Distorted color bars may occasionally appear in the lower
third of an image. The image is fine, but has just not been drawn properly by
the browser. This may indicate that memory is low.
To correct this, simply click the next or previous arrows and then return
to the image. Another solution is to zoom on the image by clicking on it once.
For some reason, the "Reload" function does not seem to correct this.
**Fuzzy Images**
Make sure your monitor is set to display "Thousands of
Colors" in the "Monitors" control panel. "256 colors"
looks fairly nice, but "Thousands of Colors" is highly recommended.
**Tips for Enhancing Performance**
Increase Available Memory:
Turn Virtual Memory on in the Memory control panel to increase your
available RAM. This allows your computer to use hard disk space to simulate
more memory for applications. This works especially well if you have a fast
hard drive. More physical RAM is always the best option however.
Adjust Netscape Navigator memory settings in the "Get Info" box
(Highlight the Netscape icon in the Mac Finder and then choose "Get
Info" from the file menu) This will allow you to increase or decrease the
memory used for the browser so it balances with other active programs.
This is a typical memory usage scenario.

* IMPORTANT: Be sure to account for the 8MB of invisible RAM being used
by Verity. This item does not show up in the "About this Macintosh"
memory usage monitor (Under the Apple Menu) but it is most definitely being
used. If you see "search.1" appear in the title bar, please note that
it is the Web Server application that allows the search engine to work on your
computer.
