The Saunders Electronic Nursing Drug Cards 2002 CD-ROM gives users quick and easy access to 375 compact drug card monographs, 55 drug classifications, as well as the opportunity to test their pharmacology knowledge with a database of over 250 NCLEX-style questions. The user will have several options: read drug cards and classification information, begin an NCLEX quiz, review additional information on IV compatibility and the nurse's role, or choose from an extensive list of appendixes.

The attractive 4-color drug cards present information such as the generic drug name, brand name, classification, fixed combinations, pregnancy/lactation, availability, pharmacokinetics, action/therapeutic effect, uses/unlabeled uses, administration/handling, indication/route/dosage, precautions, interactions, side effects, adverse reactions/toxic effects, and nursing implications. The administration/handling and indication/route/dosage sections utilize subheadings to display each generic drug form and route of administration. The side effects section lists side effects by percentage of frequency, when available. The nursing implications section breaks down information according to the baseline assessment, intervention/evaluation, and patient/family teaching.

The extensive data regarding each of the 55 drug classification categories is broken down by uses, interactions, side effects, toxic effects/adverse reactions (if applicable), and nursing implications. Each classification category includes a table of generic drugs in that classification. These tables include varying information, such as brand names, routes of administration, dosage ranges, and uses. If a generic drug in one of these tables is present in the card deck, it will appear hyperlinked in the table. The user can click on the hyperlink and will go directly to the drug card.

Drug card information can be quickly accessed by choosing from an alphabetical listing of generic and trade drug names or by selecting a menu option showing all the drug cards in the deck for a given clinical or pharmacotherapeutic drug classification category. Drug cards may be printed in a standard drug card format.

The program will time and score all questions in a similar manner as the actual NCLEX exam. Quizzes may be printed.

Additional information on the CD includes an IV compatibility chart, a discussion of The Nurse's Role, and the following appendixes: Commonly Used Abbreviations, Therapeutic and Toxic Blood Levels, Calculation of Doses, Controlled Drugs (United States), Normal Laboratory Values, FDA Pregnancy Categories, Signs and Symptoms of Toxic Effects/Adverse Reactions, Rates of Intermittent IV (piggyback) administration, The Prescription, Dialysis of Medications, Techniques of Medication Administration, Nomogram for the Determination of Body Surface Area of Children and Adults, and Herbal Therapies.
